Fostering creativity through imagination

Creativity seems to emerge from multiple experiences, coupled with a well-supported development of personal resources, including a sense of freedom to venture beyond the known.
—Loris Malaguzzi, The Hundred Languages of Children

Young children need unstructured opportunities for play in environments that arouse their curiosity, and excite their imaginations because children learn about themselves and the world through this type of authentic play.

At Marvelous Child, we have a full ½ half acre of green space to create an educational, explorational and  inspirational environment.

  • Physical movements of climbing, jumping, rolling and crawling can be facilitated deliberately through the play with large wooden structures and boulders.

  • A tinker table, complete with baskets of loose materials can encourage the construction of wonder-filled creations. Natural materials are ideally suited to providing sensory play, with tactile engagement of the senses.

  • A nature exploration area where children play with wood, rock and boulders

  •  A spacious green backyard where students can enjoy variety of activities, sports and  variations of role playing and imaginative play.

  • A designated vegetable and fruit garden where horticulture classes take place in the Spring.

  • A Reggio Emilia playground is designed around a circular central meeting place and then emanates outwards and uses elements found in nature for children to create imaginative play.

Through their experiences in the natural world, children not only learn to enjoy their time outdoors but also prepare for creative and informed participation in society and in environmental preservation. (Chawla, 2002; Chawla & Cushing, 2007; Moore & Young, 1978).
